Complacency is defined in the dictionary as “self-satisfaction accompanied by unawareness of actual danger or deficiencies.” Complacency is often a major safety issue on worksites around Australia.
Many workplace accidents occur because the jobs are repetitive in nature. The more we repeat what we are doing, the more complacent we become. Therein lies the danger. Working safely is not easy nor should it be automatic.
With a project of reasonable size there is usually a take-off, peak and wind down. Safety is considered throughout each stage, but what happens if the project plateaus? This is when many workers become complacent and safety issues arise.
Monadelphous is a leading Australian engineering group providing construction, maintenance and industrial services to the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors. They have been involved in some of Australia’s biggest and most complex projects and facilities.
PBF Australia has worked with Monadelphous in the past. We were approached again this year to conduct an Injury Prevention Workplace Program, to help combat complacency on a long running project that had plateaued. PBF’s Workplace Program is successful because it engages workers through our powerful and inspirational presenters, who have sustained a spinal cord injury through a workplace incident.
Jason McGregor presented to the Oxley based Monadelphous employees on 24th March. Through PBF’s workplace presentation, Jason challenged the employees to face the reality that everyone is responsible for safe work practices, and that their actions or inactions can have serious life changing consequences.
A key factor in Monadelphous’ success is their culture and values, reflecting that they are committed to the safety, wellbeing and development of their people. The culture at Monadelphous is demonstrated through the stories that are shared and remembered – what a great fit with PBF Australia as Jason shared his powerful story about taking on board safety as a core life value.
