The Christmas/New Year holiday period in Australia represents one of the highest risk periods for incurring a spinal cord injury. Whether it be travelling in the car to a party or your holiday destination, climbing up a ladder to install your Christmas lights or simply playing in our beautiful waterways – the most common causes of spinal cord injury are preventable.
Whilst PBF Australia appreciates that everyone needs time to socialise and celebrate, it is often a time when safety is forgotten. The best way to prevent a spinal cord injury from occurring is to be aware that it could happen to you.
Phil Stephenson (CEO of Tewantin-Noosa RSL) recently caught up with Tony South (PBF Corporate Membership Manager) to discuss their shared passion in ensuring that all of their members, guests and local community stay safe this holiday season.
With a shared vision of serving the community, Tewantin-Noosa RSL joined the PBF family as one of our newest corporate members in October of this year. Upon hearing what PBF Australia achieves in regards to protecting, preventing and supporting those living with spinal cord injuries, Phil immediately grasped how this traumatic lifestyle change impacts not only the individual but their family, friends and community. Every year 350-400 spinal cord injuries occur in Australia. Spinal cord injury is permanent – there is no cure.
The Buchanan-Ross family founded the Tewantin RSL Club in August 1920, as a meeting place for returned service personnel and for local gatherings and functions. Giving back to the community has become a hallmark of the Club. Beneficiaries across all aspects of the community are given support including individuals, sporting groups, community associations, service clubs and schools. PBF Australia are also proud of our community involvement through educating schools and workplaces on the risks of spinal cord injury.
No-one expects a split second decision to result in a spinal cord injury – please stay safe this holiday season.
